Each night when I tuck my daughters into bed, I whisper in their ear, “dream big dreams, sweetheart.” It’s something I have done since they were newborn babies, and something I continue to do to this day. Saying this little phrase didn’t happen through conscious thought, it just happened and it felt right. It was the one simple message that must have resonated with me somewhere deep inside my soul so many years ago, and seemed like the perfect sentiment to send them off to dreamland with each night.
As I sit and reflect on that simple message, it reminds of so many people I meet each week who have simply forgotten how to dream. People who have all of the potential in the world, but who have chosen to settle for “good enough” in their lives.
Does that describe someone you know? Or is it perhaps YOU? If so, I invite you, as we enter into this new year, to make the CHOICE and DECISION to dream again. What is it that you TRULY desire? What is your REAL passion? What do you long for and want MORE of in your life?
Without dedicating conscious thought and energy to what you truly desire, life remains the same—good or bad. And the wide-eyed dreams you had as a child simply get justified away … “I’m too old, I can’t do THAT, I am not smart enough, I don’t have enough experience, who would want me”… and so on.
It’s time to jump into the driver’s seat of your life and stop allowing life to happen TO you.
Someday, probably in the not too distant future, I won’t be able to tuck my daughters into bed each night … perhaps they won’t even want me to. And that’s okay. It’s all a part of the process. The comforting piece is that I know that somewhere deep inside them, through one simple, consistent message, they know that their lives are full of possibility and that it’s never too early, or too late, to DREAM BIG DREAMS.
Here’s to a new year filled with your dreams becoming your reality!
